We visited a small craft beer bar in Toronto called Barvolo on our way home after work last Wednesday. It was a really great place especially if you like craft beer but even I, who doesn't drink beer, was really impressed and will definitely be returning. They only had three wines available but the one I had was really good - a Norman Hardy Riesling. The staff were so friendly and knowledgable and I loved the set up with the flowers in the beer growlers. On the food front, we only tried their crisps on this visit but I'm already planning to try the cheese board next time!

Niagara Falls 8th - 10th February

We managed to pick the snowiest weekend so far this winter to visit Niagara Falls but it provided some beautiful scenery.
We arrived while it was still snowing fast, and timed it right when there were no taxis at the bus station to take us to our hotel. I think they must have all given up due to the bad weather. Luckily a bus came along a few minutes later and while it didn't drop us off at the door, we were much closer.

The cold weather combined with the spray from the Falls provided some truly amazing sights. The water at the bottom of the Falls was largely frozen, with snow gathering in top of the ice; and huge icicles were hanging along the steep surrounding edges.

We ate at our usual spots (TGI Fridays and Bravo Pizza), and visited Ripley's Believe It Or Not. We also caught the local bus to the shopping outlet and managed to get some new work out clothes and trainers on a great sale.

Valentine's Day

I was at work all day on Valentine's day, and at Brownies for a pancake supper in the evening, so Mike cooked dinner for when I got home.

I had asked for The Vintage Tea Party Book and so Mike decided to make some of these recipes. I was so impressed, he had kept it a secret and planned it all on his own. We had plum and honey tea bread which was delicious, with home made strawberry jam and whiskey marmalade also from the book. Next up was beef tomatoes stuffed with cheese, pesto and an egg.
It all looked amazing and tasted even better! I'm so lucky :)

Montreal 2nd - 3rd February

On Saturday we took the Megabus (with our free tickets) to Montreal to see Manjusha and Nikil. We arrived around lunch time and ate at a great brew pub in downtown Montreal call Le Saint Bock.

Later on we headed over to the island to La FĂȘte des Neiges where there was dog sledding, slides carved out of the ice, ice sculptures and lots of small stalls. It was really cool but it was bitterly cold so we didn't stay too long. Manjusha and Nikil introduced us to maple syrup taffy; were maple syrup is boiled and then poured onto clean snow and left for around 30 seconds to begin to solidify. Then press a lolly stick into one end and roll the maple syrup around the stick.

Manjusha cooked a delicious meal for us that evening (and again for breakfast). I wish we had pictures of all that food :) We had some Ice cider and started to watch a film but we didn't get far before we began to fall asleep after the busy day.

On Sunday we went to the shopping outlet over the road from where Manjusha and Nikil live. We found some bargains in the Gap and Banana Republic outlets with skirts at $2 and Gap hoodies at $4!
Late afternoon we had some fancy poutine for dinner at Pountineville (as it was poutine week in Montreal), before catching the bus back to Toronto.

Thanks for a great weekend Manjusha and Nikil!

The maple syrup taffy - I do look a bit cold!
