Jasper 8-12th August

Posted by Unknown on Tuesday 20 August 2013.

On our drive to Jasper we pass a sign for the scenic route to Alaska! It only takes a couple of days :)

Entering the park - we now have a family pass to enter all national and provincial parks in Canada for free.

Wapiti campground, our home for the next 3 nights.

Our new big tent. Now we can go glamping.

Quick breakfast the next morning.

Early morning paddle at Patricia Lake on our way to Pyramid Lake.

At Pyramid Lake we rented a canoe for an hour. It was a really stunning location and apparently has a bit less wildlife so I didn't have to worry so much about any bears having a morning swim! (Although they did still give us a whistle 'for bears').

It was forecast to rain in the afternoon so we headed back to the campsite but the weather stayed fine so we drove up Mount Edith Cavell.

Once we reached as far as we could drive we walked the final .7km to the summit.

You can see Angel Glacier on the right and the water running down from underneath it into the tarn.

On Saturday we went to Maligne Canyon and did the short walk there. In winter when it is frozen you can walk down there on the ice. The canyon is a system of caves and passages carved out by the water in the limestone. It's so interesting to see all this Geography we learnt about at school in real life!

That afternoon we went to Lake Annette for a paddle and sat on the 'beach' for a while but it was so hot and there was no shade so we couldn't actually stay very long! We're sun sensitive!

But the water was nice and cool.

It was too hot for Mike's phone in the car!

Our only campsite visitor.

S'mores on our final night.

On our way back we stopped at Obed Lake park and cooked some pasta by the lake and had a little paddle as it ended up being pretty hot again.

We did glimpse one bear on our drive home, a baby, outside of Jasper along the Yellowhead Highway, running away from the road.
